Defeat And Death
Cover of US military newspaper The Stars and Stripes, May 1945
By late 1944 the Red Army had driven the Germans back to central Europe while the Western Allies were already advancing towards Germany. Hitler knew his country had lost the war but he did not allow any retreats. What he hoped on doing was negotiating with America and Britain which was not likely to play out the way he wanted, nor did it. And so, the Holocaust continued and more innocent people died due to Hitler’s stubbornness. Hitler believed that if he were going down, he would take Germany with him.
Things continued to progress against Hitler. Soon after His 56th birthday, Hitler and his mistress, Eva Braun, committed suicide together. Eva bit into a cyanide capsule while Hitler shot himself with a Walther PPK 7.65 mm pistol on April 30, 1945.
“The lifeless bodies of Hitler and Eva Braun were carried up the stairs and through the bunker’s emergency exit to the bombed-out garden behind the Reich Chancellery where they were placed in a bomb crater and doused with petrol. The corpses were set on fire as [Soviet troops] advanced and the shelling continued.”
This was the end.
